The top 3 do's and don'ts for your Senior Portrait Session
Senior sessions are some of my favorite sessions as I love one on one time with people. I’m pretty quiet in a large group but if I can sit down with someone, just me and them I’m totally in my element. I love to get inside people’s heads and find out what they are passionate about. I like to get beyond the surface and find out what really makes people tick. By connecting with my seniors I am able to get authentic images that truly capture that individual.
Here is a list of my top three do’s and don'ts when preparing for your senior session.
Do’s
Do stay hydrated. I can not say this enough! As I’m based in the desert staying hydrated is super important not only for your insides but also your skin. Make sure at least 3-5 days before your session you are drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water i.e. if you weigh 150 lbs you should be drinking 75oz of water each day. Because hydrated skin always photographs better than dehydrated skin.
Do invest in hair and makeup. So it’s super important to invest in hair and makeup for your photo session. It is so worth the investment. Finding an expert that can make sure your makeup looks flawless and your hair is on point not only will enhance the images but also take some pressure off of you. Allowing yourself to be pampered before your session is an added bonus. Tip: Save some $ by using a wash and blow-dry salon, where styling is included. Visit a local beauty store or favorite makeup counter at your department store, most offer a complementary makeover with a purchase. Just make sure you are clear about how you want your makeup to look. Bringing in a photo is super helpful.
Do dress to impress. It is so important to feel good in the clothes you are wearing. Clothes that fit you and you body is key. You should feel like a rock star in your clothes. If you feel like a rock star, you will exude that confidence in your photos.
Dont’s
Don’t change your skin care routine right before a session. Please don’t. I have seen this happen, changing your skin care right before a session could cause breakouts due to your skin detoxing. If you are wanting to change things up, make sure it is at least two to three weeks prior to your photo session giving your skin time to adjust to the new routine.
Don’t wear baggy, ill fitting, or skimpy clothing are not be ideal for a photo session. Don’t do it. Make sure you are wearing the clothes and the clothes are not wearing you. The focus should be on you, and not your clothing.
Don’t fake smile. If there is one thing I hate is fake. Don’t even try it, I look into my clients eyes and I can see when they are genuinely smiling. Be warned, I will call you out on fake…ask anyone of my previous clients.
Following these tips will help you have an even more successful senior session.
